What is the current situation in India?

At the moment, India’s workforce has a severe gap in formal skill training of any kind. Due to this many sectors in the country face an acute shortage of skilled manpower leading to low productivity and poor quality of work. India is also witnessing rapid growth in the country’s youth that are looking for economic and financial opportunities for a better livelihood. In this context, skilling or skill development has become a key priority area for the economic growth of the country.

How can we promote skilling or skill development?

With the steady growth in the Indian economy and the emerging need for a skilled workforce, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) was established in 2014 with an overall objective to promote skilling and entrepreneurship development in India.

To overcome this skill gap and aligned with the Skilled India vision, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) scheme was launched on 20 March 2015.

What is the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) scheme?

It is India’s largest Skill Certification Scheme, implemented by the National Skills Development Corporation (NSDC) under the guidance of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) scheme provides free Short Term Training (STT) courses aimed toward the skilling of unemployed youth in India.
